This community park comprises 1.54 acres and
is found along the banks of Paint Creek in
Downtown Lake Orion.
History
The Village acquired the property that now
encompasses Children’s Park by quit claim
deeds from the American Legion Post 233 and
Mr. Oscar Letts for “$1.00 and other valuable
consideration” on September 1, 1955.
Facilities
Children’s Park is located on the east side of
Broadway south of Front Street. Paint Creek, a
tributary of the Clinton River, runs through it.
The Park is a favorite gathering spot for families,
especially those with young children. At
noontime during the Spring, Summer, and
Autumn seasons, local workers often enjoy a
moment of peace and quiet while they eat their
lunch in the park.
The Park is also the site of various community events including the Optimists Club’s annual rubber
ducky race, a variety of River Day events each year, and concerts in the park each summer.
In the past few years, several new facilities were constructed including playscapes and a gazebo.
With the addition of these new facilities, the park features a variety of recreation options. A large
paved parking lot is found north of the park. Access to the Village parking lot is provided by
Anderson Street. A large horseshoe area featuring a total of 30 pits is found on the east side of the
Creek, south of the parking lot. This horseshoe area is primarily utilized by members of the Lake
Orion Horseshoe Club. This is the site of an annual, state-wide horseshoe pitching tournament held
each mid-June.
A pedestrian bridge (currently closed for repairs) over Paint
Creek provides access from the parking lot to
the facilities located on the southwest side of
the Creek. Included among these facilities are
two playgrounds, one for 2 to
5 year olds and another for 5 to 12 year olds. A
gazebo is also found in this area. This gazebo is
utilized for a variety of events including
concerts, sing-alongs, and other performances.
Other facilities include swings, picnic tables,
park benches, and bike racks.
